A Romantic Summer Lake of the Isles Minneapolis Elopement
This whimsical brunch elopement in Minneapolis is the perfect example of how a Lake of the Isles Minneapolis elopement can feel both cozy and full all at once.
Victoria & Ivar created a day that reflected exactly who they are together: fun-loving, creative dreamers who are passionate about working a little whimsy into their everyday adventures. They celebrated their marriage with a non-traditional ceremony they planned themselves, featuring a puppet show and a day centered around having fun with their closest people.

Why Lake of the Isles Is One of the Best Places to Elope in Minneapolis
If you’re searching for places to elope in Minneapolis, Lake of the Isles deserves a spot at the top of your list.
Choosing a nature-centered wedding venue in Minneapolis is ideal if you’re planning an elopement or micro wedding. A Lake of the Isdles Minneapolis elopement will work especially well with just the two of you and your witnesses, or something a little larger like what this couple planned with 10–20 guests.
Despite being a Minneapolis park, it feels like a private oasis surrounded by nature. What makes it even more special is that Lake of the Isles is part of this couple’s neighborhood—the place they bike, walk, and spend their everyday lives. To them, it feels like home.
As far as intimate wedding locations in Minneapolis go, it’s hard to beat a location that already holds so much meaning.
First Moments
Before the ceremony, the energy was festive, with guests encouraged to sign the guest book and then make their own sock puppet wedding favor. The couple wanted guests to play and have a good time, and this crafting station was a genius way to do that.
They spent time greeting guests and preparing for the biggest puppet show ever—their wedding ceremony.
This created a really grounded start to the day, filled with joy and fun instead of rushing and stress.

Wedding Ceremony at Lake of the Isles

The ceremony took place outdoors beneath the shade of mature trees, with sparkling lake views and a gentle summer breeze setting the scene.
The ceremony design for this Lake of the Isles Minneapolis elopement was centered around joy, play, and connection. Guests weren’t just watching from a distance. They were fully engaged in the celebration and close enough to experience every laugh, happy tear, and puppet-related surprise.
Personal touches were woven throughout the ceremony, from the couple’s self-planned celebration to the whimsical puppet show that made their wedding uniquely their own.

Wedding Portraits Around Lake of the Isles

One of my favorite parts about photographing this Lake of the Isles Minneapolis elopement was the dreamy summer atmosphere. The sparkling morning light and graceful willow branches dancing in the breeze made every moment feel effortlessly romantic.
I guided the couple through portraits in a way that felt natural and unforced—offering direction when needed while leaving space for movement and real emotion. This kept photography feeling easy and fun.
For couples looking for Minneapolis elopement ideas, incorporating time for portraits around the lake is one of the best ways to fully experience everything this beautiful location has to offer.

A Brunch Elopement Reception at French Meadow
While we were finishing up wedding portraits at Lake of the Isles, guests headed to French Meadow for cocktail hour.

Guests enjoyed their favorite brunch drinks, including mimosas and delicious coffee. This part of the day became more than just a transition—it was part of the celebration itself.
As brunch continued, the couple arrived and, after greeting their guests, sat down to a lovely spread of waffles, bacon, eggs, and other brunch comfort foods. A lovely cake topped off the menu.
The lighting shifted into the warm glow of midday, and the energy moved naturally from heartfelt moments into full celebration. Speeches, laughter, and plenty of fun with the puppets kept the celebration playful, just like the couple’s romance.

Tips for Planning an Elopement or Wedding at Lake of the Isles
Permit Needed
You must apply for a low impact wedding permit to get married at Lake of The Isles.
Guest Count Flexibility
For the low-impact wedding permit, the City of Minneapolis requires 30 guests or fewer, which is just right for this space.
Timeline Considerations
Have your elopement or micro wedding at Lake of the Isles on a weekday morning between 9-11am This is the best time to enjoy the lake and surrounding park with fewer crowds and morning joggers, plus skip the worst of morning traffic for those coming into the city from the suburbs.
Sunset can also be a beautiful time for portraits, but on nice days you’ll find the park is often much busier in the evenings, which isn’t ideal for a wedding ceremony.
Lighting Tips
Find a Minneapolis elopement photographer who understands more than just the basics of natural light and is comfortable photographing outdoors at any time of day.
Many photographers will tell you sunset is the only time for good light, but the reality is that any time can be beautiful if your photographer knows how to work with the conditions.
How to Lean Into the Venue
Keep decorations to a minimum for easy setup and cleanup. Plan on having guests stand during the ceremony to comply with permit requirements.
